TO IMPORTANT SIGHTS IN BERCHTESGARDEN - BAVARIA
Attractive destinations for excursions to the vicinity

The Eagle’s Nest
'The Eagle’s Nest' (Kehlsteinhaus) is a chalet-style
building which used to be an extension of the Obersalzberg-complex
built by the Nazis in the German Alps near Berchtesgaden.
The impressive building with its meter thick walls is situated on the
top of the mountain Kehlstein. The summit offers a breathtaking view
over the Berchtesgaden area. The guests reach the 'The Eagle’s
Nest' with a luxurious brass elevator (124 m (406 ft) through
the rock in only 41 seconds).
History
The Eagle’s Nest was designed by Martin Bormann on behalf of the
NSDAP as a birthday present for Adolf Hitler’s
50th birthday.
Hitler in fact seldomly visited the Eagle’s Nest. More information
can be found on
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kehlsteinhaus.
The Eagle’s Nest is open for visitors from May until the end
of October.
Königssee
The Königssee (King's Lake) is located south of the city Salzburg
in the German Alps. The lake is known for its clear water. For this
reason only electric boats and rowing boats are permitted. The lake
and the surrounding landscape are popular for hikers.
St. Bartholomä / St Bartholomew's Church
The Palace and pilgrimage church were founded by the Prince-Provosts
of Berchtesgaden in 1134. The triple-concha design of the church dates
back to 1697. Since the Romantic period St Bartholomew's Church has
been a source of inspiration for numerous landscape painters.
Watzmann
is the most famous peak in the Berchtesgaden Alps. The view from north
with the several peaks of the big and small Watzmann is very impressive.
The secondary peak - called Hocheck (2651 m) - can easily be reached
from the Watzmannhaus.
Bad Reichenhall
Bad Reichenhall is a royal spa with tradition: drinking treatment in
the
'Wandelhalle', inhale healthy-sprayed alpine brine at the 'Gradierhaus',
float in alpine brine in the 'Spa&Fitness Resort RupertusTherme'
and modern life. Beautifully tended parks, an elegant pedestrian area
with numerous shops, restaurants and historical sights make this alpine
town one of the most precious jewels of Bavaria. Bad Reichenhall is surrounded
by a delightful landscape.
Not far from Salzburg is the romantic Lake 'Chiemsee':
an ideal destination for nature lovers, art enthusiasts and recreation
seekers.
Island 'Fraueninsel'
The island 'Fraueninsel' is a very idyllic jewel piece with
an old fishing village, flower-filled gardens, typical beer gardens and
the old monastery 'Frauenwörth'. It was founded in the
eighth century and is still inhabited by Benedictine nuns. The gate-house
is the oldest of its kind in Southern Bavaria and the frescoes in St.
Michael's Chapel are some of the earliest ever found in Bavaria. The
small island attracts visitors from all over the world and it has been
home to many artists.
Island ' Herrenchiemsee'“
'Herrenchiemsee' was King Ludwig's project of a New Versailles. The King
of Bavaria had erected a copy of Versailles on the island 'Herrenchiemsee',
with the name 'Herrenchiemsee Palace', the New Castle.
The copy surpasses the original. The main highlights of the more than
twenty state rooms are the Ambassador's Staircase, the Great Hall of
Mirrors and the State Bedchamber. The palace park also features motifs
of Versailles.
King Ludwig II Museum in New
Castle
Twelve rooms on the ground floor of the south wing of this modernly designed

life beginning from birth to early tragic death on the basis of painted
portraits, busts, historic photographs and original clothing.
As a patron of the composer Richard Wagner, the Bavarian
king went down in music history. On this subject are portraits, written
documents as well as theatre and stage design models.
Museum in the former Augustinian Monastery (Old Palace)
The present monastery buildings were erected in Baroque. Four wings are
