Salzburg Museum
is situated in the 400-year-old
New Residence. The Museum presents history, art and culture of Salzburg in an
exciting, informative and entertaining way. 'The Salzburg myth' is
the permanent exhibit. It presents the great Salzburg topics of modern
times. The question of how the legendary 'Salzburg
myth' originated, how it was molded by the Romantic painters in
the early 19th century and how it developed and survived up to the present.
Other themes include the absolutist reign of Salzburg's archbishops,
effects of the persecution of the Jews and the counterreformation
in Salzburg.

With its spectacular location in one of the most beautiful
places in the world the museum represents a sensitive dovetailing of
the natural/urban landscape. The two museums - museum of modern
art Mönchsberg and the
original Rupertinum building
in the centre of the old town - provide space
for thematic exhibitions of art of the 20th and 21st century as well
as for presentations of collections and the Austrian Gallery of
Photography.

'Masterpieces'
The Residenz Gallery shows European
Paintings of the 16th and 19th century. The focus is on 17th-century
Dutch painting (Rembrandt, Rubens, Brueghel), 17th and 18th-century Italian,
French and Austrian painting as well as works by 19th-century Austrian
