Oberammergau Passion Play

Every ten years - since 1634 - the charming Bavarian village of Oberammergau re-creates the death and resurrection of Christ in their haunting Passion Play.

The history of the Oberammergau Passion Play begins in 1633, during the Thirty Years War: The plague and the war brought great suffering to Oberammergau. So it happened that the inhabitants of Oberammergau took off the promise to list every ten years the 'Game of suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ'. The first Passion Play took place in 1634 and already in the middle of the 18th Century the Passion Play of Oberammergau became an important attraction in Germany.

The cast is made up exclusively of villagers and equals any professional production in sheer spectacle and emotion. Attracting visitors from around the world it is a journey that will exceed every expectation.

The history of the Passion of Jesus of Nazareth is performed. The play starts with Jesus entering Jerusalem, continues up to his death on the cross and finishes with his resurrection.

More than 2,000 actors are involved in the Oberammergau Passion Play. It means that over 2,000 people from Oberammergau hold the promise of their ancestors and play with great passion the story of the man who gives people hope and strength for centuries.
